The modern territory, called Piceno, which was once inhabited by an ancient Piceni tribe, covers the southern part of the Marche region and the northern part of the Abruzzo region. Legend has it that, about eight centuries before Christ, the Sabina tribe emigrated in search of new green pastures.
“The Picenes came here from the Sabina, under the guidance of a woodpecker who pointed the way to the founders. Their name derives from this: in fact they call picus this bird, and they consider it sacred to Ares. They are set up from the mountains to the plains and the sea … »The story about the origin of the Picenes narrated by the Greek geographer Strabone.
The Piceno offers a wide range of different routes for travelers because they are full of ancient medieval villages, amphitheatres, museums and art galleries, archaeological sites, monuments of Romanesque and medieval architecture.
